Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP)
Audience: The Neonatal Resuscitation Program™ is designed for health care professionals involved in any aspect of neonatal resuscitation, including physicians, nurses, advanced practice nurses, nurse midwives, licensed midwives, respiratory care practitioners, and other health care professionals who provide direct care during neonatal resuscitation.
The Neonatal Resuscitation Program™ is an educational training course that introduces the concepts and basic skills of neonatal resuscitation. Completion of the program does not imply that an individual has the competence to perform neonatal resuscitation. Each hospital is responsible for determining the level of competence and qualifications required for someone to assume clinical responsibility for neonatal resuscitation.
Part 1, Prestudy: The first part of the course is self-study of the Textbook of Neonatal Resuscitation (7th edition). This textbook is available for purchase from Cascade or on the AAP Bookstore. Many students who work in labor and delivery, NICU, or neonatology will find that they are already very familiar with the NRP Guidelines and do not need to spend as much time in self-study. However, if this material is new or unfamiliar, the new 7th edition Textbook of Neonatal Resuscitation is the most valuable resource to prepare for the online exam and the classroom portion of the course.
Part 2, Online Exam: The second part of the NRP course is the NRP Online Exam. There are two sections of 25 questions and four e-Sim Cases. Prior to attending Part 3 of the course a student MUST successfully complete both portions of the exam and the e-Sim Cases. The NRP Online Exam is available for purchase during course registration, and once you purchase the exam, instructions and an exam key will be emailed to you within two business days. If you need the exam sooner, please contact us during normal business hours at (603) 668-5360. You must complete Part 3 within 90 days of completing your NRP Online Exam or else the exam will need to be retaken.
Part 3, Skills Evaluation: The third and final part of the course is the mandatory classroom portion including demonstration, hands-on practice, skills evaluation, simulation, and debriefing. On the day of your classroom session, an instructor will demonstrate the skills and be available to coach you before testing begins. You must successfully pass all portions of the required NRP Online Exam before participating in the classroom portion of the course. You must also complete your classroom portion within 90 days of completing your NRP Online Exam. You will be expected to demonstrate basic neonatal resuscitation skills and participate in a team resuscitation and debriefing. Successful completion of the online exam and the skills demonstration will result in an American Academy of Pediatrics/AHA NRP certification card valid for two years.
Course Format / Time: After completion of the online course: Small Group Learning Stations & Practical Testing Scenarios
Enrollment Cut-off: Enrollment closes when the class is full. Those that enroll within a few days of the class may have their book held until the day of the class.
Course Materials and Prerequisites: All materials, as well as access to the NRP Online Exam, can be found on the AAP website. On the course date, the participant must submit their online exam completion certificate. You cannot attend the skills demonstration portion without proof of completion of the NRP Online Exam.
